On any given night, there are bluegrass, country, old-time, western swing, blues, and many other roots musicians playing in New York. Check them out at some of these venues:
The jewel of Red Hook, Jalopy is operated by the kindest couple north of the Mason Dixon, Geoff and Lynette Wiley. Try a beer off the tap in a Ball jar. Take a class in mandolin, banjo, guitar, fiddle, or vocal harmony.
Get there 20 minutes early, because Barbes always fills up. This little Park Slope venue gets great acts.
The name says it all. Great shows, great jams. Banjo Jim’s is a Manhattan favorite.
City Winery is the brainchild of the man who used to run the Knitting Factory. Music + wine = good times.
Can you say, ‘brisket’? This is a fine venue, and an even finer place to dig in on beef and swine. These folks know what they are doing with the booking and the bbq’ing.
The finest bluegrass brunch in all of New York, the owner Tanya makes Sunday a day to celebrate.
A cozy spot- but make a reservation! Nolita House has a great bluegrass brunch as well but it fills up faster than grandpappy’s still.
More of a rock venue, but Bell House occasionally pulls together some great country and bluegrass shows. Check their calendar.
