Jason Cade of The Weal and the Woe writes that the band will play Barbes Brooklyn tomorrow night, Thursday April 14th. The Weal and the Woe presents “vintage country, gospel classics and close harmony from a faraway time. Drawing from the deep well of country “brother” duets from the middle third of the twentieth century, they sing songs of love and loss, drinkin’ and cheatin’, Old Time Religion and life back home in the Gowanus Valley-including vintage classics as well as newly penned originals.”
Check out this excellent group in this intimate venue- a great Thursday night. They are followed by Andy Statman, on at 10 pm.
Barbes posted this on its website:
You ‘ve probably noticed the bust that sits in the window between the bar and the performance space. It’s a bust of Jose Gregorio, a Venezuelan saint worshiped by followers of the cult of Maria Lionza. Jose Gregorio has been our mascot and protector for now ten years. Yesterday, someone stole the bust. We don’t think it’s funny.
If you happen to spot it in your friend’s living room, please tell him to bring it back.
That ain’t cool.
If you haven’t seen Howard Fishman, he’s a great guitarist playing with a great band that draws from folk and jazz sources such as Django Reinhardt, Charley Patton and Ralph Stanley and filters them through the gritty sensibility of a latter day Lou Reed. He’ll be at Barbes Brooklyn 10:00 PM this Saturday, June 5th. Fishman has three new albums out this year- “BETTER GET RIGHT” is inspired by New Orleans. The other two are “NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS” and `THE WORLD WILL BE DIFFERENT”.
Jan Bell, British born and Brooklyn based “Alt. Country Americana Singer/Songwriter and founding member of The Maybelles”, takes to the intimate stage at Barbes Brooklyn this Thursday, March 11 at 10 pm. A taste is at her MySpace page. She’ll be accompanied in this instance by banjo player Hilary Hawke and Ohio musician Megan Palmer. A powerful trio- should be great fun.

Great show at Barbes Brooklyn last night by the reunited Roulette Sisters. Enjoyed the vocal and washboard stylings of Megan Burelyson, the keen viola by Karen Waltuch, Meg Riechardt’s excellent guitar, and the resonator and deep vocal stylings of Miss Mamie Minch. The band is well complemented by the addition of Waltuch’s ‘big fiddle’- which added quite a lot to the sound since their first album, “Nerve Medicine”. Enjoyed the reunion, the ladies were in fine fettle and the crowd ate it up, particularly old favorites like “Sugar in My Bowl”. Here’s hoping they’ll stay together, put out another record and announce some more dates soon!
