Learn to sing, clog or play an instrument this winter at Jalopy Theatre and School of Music

Jalopy Theatre and School of Music has posted its winter term class schedule. As an alum of a few classes, I can tell you it is time and money well spent, and is the best antidote there is to the stress of big city livin’. Learn to sing in harmony, finger pick the blues, frail on the banjo, strum the ukelele or even how to clog! Classes start next week and run through the new year.  You can register online here.

Come down to The Brooklyn Folk Festival in Redhook Brooklyn over the weekend Friday, June 10th- Sunday, June 12th to hear Brooklyn’s best traditional Folk musicians and song writers. You will hear banjos, fiddles, mandolins, guitars, people blowing on jugs and harmonicas, a world champion whistler as well as great original songs. If you want to learn how to play, come down to the afternoon instrumental workshops. The festival costs $20 per day or $55 for 3 days, including the film screenings.  Afernoon Workshops are individually priced. Jalopy presents some fine music this week.  On Thursday March 31st at 9 pm treat yourself to The Fiddle and the Banjo: A Night of Duets with Tom Bailey, Melody Berger, Ellery Marshall, Jason Cade, Nathaniel Rowan, Joel Wennerstrom, Russell Durham, Diane Stockwell and Charles Puckette.

Then, Saturday April 2nd, get your first look at what Eli Smith is cooking up for the third annual Brooklyn Folk Festival.  The show starts at 9 pm and will feature Æ - music from the mountainous areas of Appalachia and the Republic of Georgia; at 9:45: Blind Boy Paxton with blues, ragtime guitar, and stride piano; and at 10:30: The Dust Busters.


Frank Fairfield and Blind Boy Paxton July 20 at 9:30 pm at Jalopy

Los Angeles based traditional old time musician Frank Fairfield will be at Jalopy July 20 for a show with his friend Blind Boy Paxton.  For a great interview with Fairfield, visit Eli Smith’s Down Home Radio Show and listen to his audio interview with Fairfield.  Fairfield and Paxton will likely put on a fantastic show together- these are two fantastic musicians with a great command of pre war American music.

Brownbird Rudy Relic with Blind Boy Paxton and Ernie Vega at Jalopy next Friday, April 9th!  Brownbird is a fantastic persona-performer- I first saw him at the Brooklyn Country Music Festival a couple of years ago.  Sit in the third row- he’s a belter and he’s likely to climb out into the audience and play a tune sitting on your lap.  This will be a great night at Jalopy!

Brooklyn Folk Festival Preview Show and Benefit Concert

Jalopy presents the Brooklyn Folk Festival Preview Show and Benefit Concert on Saturday, March 13th.  Eli Smith, host of the Down Home Radio Show, puts together the Folk Festival, which this year will take place on May 21st - 23rd.  The March show is a fundraiser to get the festival going.  The show will include Miss Mamie Minch (9 pm), Alex Battles and Banjorama! (10 pm), Eli Smith’s own band The Dust Busters (11 pm) and Blind Boy Paxton (midnight).  Hope to see you there.
