Eli Smith: Is folk music back? Sure is, especially at the Jalopy Theatre, where Carroll Gardens jams with Red Hook — and where this master of many stringed instruments performs and teaches. To showcase a new crop of folkies, Smith also created the Brooklyn Folk Festival, coming June 10-12 at Jalopy and the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition. From Brooklyn Independent Television’s Caught In The Act, episode 38. Original air date: 5/25/2011.
Friday, May 13th Eli Smith’s Dust Busters take the stage at Jalopy. If you don’t know this band, they are a great old time act that has been touring of late. They “strive to integrate a wide range of old timey songs, fiddle tunes, blues and originals into every performance, and infuse it all with the freewheelin high energy that characterized early string bands in the vein of the Georgia Crackers, Mississippi Sheiks, JE Mainer and His Mountaineers, etc” Opening for the band is the Brotherhood of the Jug Bland Blues.”
The Fabulous Jalopy Theatre hosts the Brooklyn Folk Festival again this year June 10th-12th, curated by Eli Smith of the Dustbusters. Friday night will be at Jalopy, and Saturday and Sunday will be at the spacious Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) on Van Brunt Street. This show is always a great time- and with a square dance and a ‘banjo toss’, it will have a few surprises this year!
“Fly Around” by The Dough Rollers and The Dust Busters.
Jalopy presents some fine music this week. On Thursday March 31st at 9 pm treat yourself to The Fiddle and the Banjo: A Night of Duets with Tom Bailey, Melody Berger, Ellery Marshall, Jason Cade, Nathaniel Rowan, Joel Wennerstrom, Russell Durham, Diane Stockwell and Charles Puckette.
Then, Saturday April 2nd, get your first look at what Eli Smith is cooking up for the third annual Brooklyn Folk Festival. The show starts at 9 pm and will feature Æ - music from the mountainous areas of Appalachia and the Republic of Georgia; at 9:45: Blind Boy Paxton with blues, ragtime guitar, and stride piano; and at 10:30: The Dust Busters.
R. Crumb playing at Jalopy last Thursday night with the Eden & John’s East River String Band, Ernesto Gomez, Pat Conte & The Dust Busters. My wife and in-laws report it was an amazing show.
December 15th: an evening of music from some of our favorite musicians hosted by some of the artists who have brought great shows to Banjo Jim’s: Lindy Loo, Brian Molnar & Joe Cassady of Avenue A Records, Eli Smith & Kristin Andreassen.
Los Angeles based traditional old time musician Frank Fairfield will be at Jalopy July 20 for a show with his friend Blind Boy Paxton. For a great interview with Fairfield, visit Eli Smith’s Down Home Radio Show and listen to his audio interview with Fairfield. Fairfield and Paxton will likely put on a fantastic show together- these are two fantastic musicians with a great command of pre war American music.
