Jalopy hosts String Band Festival Friday and Saturday, October 28-29

In 1920s and 30s America, string bands ruled the musical landscape. Playing in old-time and jazz styles with sounds as varied as the sum of their members, the music gave rise to later country and bluegrass music. Jalopy Theatre is bringing together string bands from New Orleans to California alongside local favorites like Jessy Carolina and the Hot Mess for two nights of banjos, fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and double basses!

Looking for a fight? So are the Sweetback Sisters

I had the unique pleasure of getting to listen to a house concert with Emily Miller and Jesse Milnes of the Sweetback Sisters on Friday night in Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn.  They sang with Emily’s mother, Val Mindel, and filled up the spring night with fantastic vocal harmony.

After the show I bought the new Sweetback Sisters album, Looking for a Fight, and let me tell you it’s filled with some righteous country swing sounds.  (Try a free track or download the whole album here.)  This is an album that is perfect for listening to in the morning when the coffee is brewing and their are pancakes on the griddle; or for popping in during the afternoon when it’s time for a little happy hour with your favorite liquor drink.

The band is making two stops in our neighborhood in June- at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival upstate, and then a bit closer to home at the Fabulous Jalopy Theatre on Saturday, June 16.

The Sweetback Sisters are Zara Bode, Emily Miller, Stefan Amidon, Ross “Rolling Thunder” Bellenoit, Jesse Milnes, and Bridget Kearney.  Check them out!

Eli Smith: Is folk music back? Sure is, especially at the Jalopy Theatre, where Carroll Gardens jams with Red Hook — and where this master of many stringed instruments performs and teaches. To showcase a new crop of folkies, Smith also created the Brooklyn Folk Festival, coming June 10-12 at Jalopy and the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition.  From Brooklyn Independent Television’s Caught In The Act, episode 38. Original air date: 5/25/2011.

Triboro plays a show at Jalopy Sunday, May 15th

TRIBORO is a trio that hails from the boroughs of New York, “but looks beyond the Hudson, to other places and other times, for songs and inspiration. They are an acoustic vocal trio that applies fine three-part harmony to an eclectic mix of musical genres.  Hear great old-time, new-time, Carter Family, country, Western, bluegrass and beyond.” They will be at Jalopy on Sunday night, May 15th at 9:30 pm just after guitarists Jon Sholle and Bob Jones.

Hilary Hawke and the Flipsides have a number of gigs upcoming.
