Hilary Hawke and the Flipsides have a number of gigs upcoming.
Texas Monthly, NPR, The Wall Street Journal and London’sTelegraph rarely agree on much. But each has recommended John Szwed’s new biography, Alan Lomax: The Man Who Recorded The World. Lomax, the intrepid collector of folk music, was called a ‘missionary’ by Bob Dylan for his work, and among many other accomplishments launched the careers of giants like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, and Woody Guthrie.
On Sunday, March 6th, 2011 Professor Szwed departed the hallowed halls of Columbia University, where he is a member of the Department of Music, to visit Brooklyn’s Columbia Street. There, at New York’s greatest old-time folk music venue, Jalopy Theatre, he read from his biography and answered questions about this important figure in the history of the world’s music.
This is the first of four segments from his talk.
R. Crumb playing at Jalopy last Thursday night with the Eden & John’s East River String Band, Ernesto Gomez, Pat Conte & The Dust Busters. My wife and in-laws report it was an amazing show.
On Saturday, March 26th BrooklynCountry.com and Jalopy present the Brooklyn County Fair- 4th Anniversary Edition. This showcase, which starts at 8 pm and is only $10, will include Ramblin’ Andy and The See Ya Laters, Spuyten Duyvil, Sam Otis Hill and Co., and Citizen’s Band Radio. Get your tickets early as these shows have been sold out each time since they have moved to Jalopy.
The event is sponsored by delicious Six Point Craft Ales.Allison Williams, a great old time banjo picker from Arkansas who learned the banjo in North Carolina, was in New York this weekend. She taught lessons and did a gig at Jalopy, and I caught her with the at Superfine’s bluegrass brunch. This shaky, short little video was captured with my phone, so it does not justice to the sound. Visit this site for more.

The wonderful Hilary Hawke of Hilary Hawke and the Flipsides writes that she’ll be doing a solo banjo recital next Tuesday, playing oldtime fingerpicking songs of Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, and some fingerpicking tunes in the style of Earl Scruggs, mixed with a bit of clawhammer and a little singing. She’ll be joined by three special guests on a song or two, including Valerie Mindel (Emily Miller from Sweetback sister’s mom), Rick Snell and Brian Geltner. $5 Cover.

Jalopy is listed amongst great things to do in ‘small town’ Brooklyn in, of all places, Country Living. In fact, many of the recommendations feature spots I like to haunt, including Brooklyn Larder and the Brooklyn Flea. Not bad living for a borough of 2.5 million people.
Come out to Jalopy Sunday, March 6th at 7 pm for a live reading from Alan Lomax: The Man Who Recorded The World, followed by music.

Andy Friedman featuring David Goodrich & Stephan Crump with The Pines
Brilliant Brooklyn Rockabilly. You can catch these chaps playing at Jalopy on Saturday, February 26th or at Southpaw on March 12th.

Singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, ethnomusicologist, three-time Grammy-winner, world-class musical collaborator, musicians’ advocate, world traveler, fisherman, or cigar aficionado. Taj Mahal plays Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday, April 10th at 8 pm.

These young ladies do great two part harmonies and sing some old favorites. They have a few gigs coming up, including Friday, March 11th from 6 pm at National Underground, and then again Thursday, March 25th at 8:30 pm at Jalopy.
Austin based trio Hot Club of Cowtown plays acoustic-powered, string-band music that mixes western swing with the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. They are at Joe’s Pub on Monday, March 28 at 7:30 PM.
Alan Lomax: Recording the World on NPR’s All Things Considered. This 9 minute, 24 second segment includes an interview with John Szwed, author of the new biography, Alan Lomax: The Man Who Recorded The World.
Szwed will read from his new book at Brooklyn’s Jalopy on March 6th at 7 pm. More information on the reading and live music performance is here.

A record label was born last night at Jalopy, which hosted the release party for its first record, American Songs with Fiddle and Banjo, tonight at 8 pm. You can read a bit about Geoff Wiley’s ambitions for the label at the Jalopy blog:
We already have two [more records] that are on their way to being recorded. The first will probably be last year’s Brooklyn Folk Festival, but that has some real work to get done on it. And also there’s a Roots & Ruckus compilation. And I have no idea after that.
Tonight, Saturday February 26th, Jalopy hosts The Pines, an excellent alt-folk duo made up of two chaps from Iowa. After their set Andy Friedman will take the stage.
Congratulations Jalopy!
Vera Hall (1902-1964)
Born in 1902 in Payneville, Alabama, just outside of Livingston in Sumter County, Vera Hall grew up to establish one of the most stunning bodies of American folk music on record. In 1948, with the help of Alan Lomax, Hall traveled to New York and performed on May 15 at the American Music Festival at Columbia University. During the course of this trip, Lomax interviewed Hall on several occasions. In 1959, these interviews would be transformed into Rainbow Sign, a thinly- guised biography of Hall.
Today, her work still garners attention. In 1999, techno-artist, Moby (Richard Melville Hall), included her voice and song Troubled So Hard in his multi-platinum album Play, thus introducing Halls voice to a whole new generation of listeners. Prized by scholars and folksong enthusiasts, Halls recordings include examples of early blues and folk songs that are found nowhere else. Her masterful renditions of traditional songs and stories are a defining part of Southern Black culture and the Black Belt region.
Learn more about Lomax and his career on March 6th at Jalopy. At 7 pm, John Szwed will read from his new biography of Lomax, Alan Lomax: The Man Who Recorded the World. Information is here.
This track is accompanied by some great video, including of the meandering Route 40 which runs through Pittsylvania and Franklin Counties west past Rocky Mount and Ferrum into Patrick county. Reminds me of home! The Dixie Beeliners play at Jalopy tonight at 8 pm.
