Mamie Minch, a Brooklyn blues treasure, is profiled in Guitar World today:
But how did this art major from Delaware find her way down this delightful, if not dusty, path?
“As a teenager I started making my own consumer decisions as to what music to buy,” says Mamie. “I found myself attracted to Muddy Waters because that’s good. It’s good shit. And I even found a Muddy Waters song called ‘Mamie,’ and I thought, wow! I’ve never met anyone else named Mamie! That was my narcissistic door in, I guess. From there, I just got really into the acoustic blues stuff. My folks like blues music, too. And it kinda went from there. I kept meeting people who were into it! I played through college and then came here to New York to be a visual artist, but I found that I could make more money playing guitar.”
A new project featuring JC Hopkins, Mamie Minch, and special guests, Midnight Hours has been quietly popping up around town and blowing away all those lucky enough to catch it live. JC Hopkins is a playwright, poet, filmmaker, painter, piano bar entertainer, Grammy nominated composer of wry, inventive tunes and front man for one of the hippest little big bands in the country, the JC Hopkins Biggish Band. Mamie Minch is a breathtakingly talented singer and guitarist and interpreter of vintage blues songs. Together they’re Midnight Hours. The show will feature an opening set by Al Duvall. This Friday, 5/27, $10. Advance tix available by calling 212.601.1000 or at

Be warned. Contains ridiculous amounts of soul. Brooklyn’s own Mamie Minch plays the hell out of a Bessie Smith song.
Only for the truly devoted, a night of music on Super Bowl Sunday-Mamie Minch, the Little Brothers, and Mr Omuck and the Academy of the Ancient Blues. The show starts at 8 pm at Jalopy.
Mamie Minch, Feral Foster and the Two Man Gentlemen Band aboard the Mary Whalen in Red Hook last Wednesday.

On Wednesday, August 18th, Jalopy’s weekly Roots ‘n’ Ruckus takes to the waves on board the Mary A. Whalen at Pier 11 in Red Hook. They’ve put quite the show together for this field trip- the Two Man Gentlemen Band will headline, along with Brooklyn faves Mamie Minch and Dayna Kurtz, pianist Stephanie Nilles, and Feral Foster. When is the last time you got to see a show on a 2,800 square foot cargo ship? More info at the Pier 11 website, including directions. This should be a fine Brooklyn night- you poor Manhattan folk can probably get to this venue via the Ikea water taxi.
Jalopy presents the Brooklyn Folk Festival Preview Show and Benefit Concert on Saturday, March 13th. Eli Smith, host of the Down Home Radio Show, puts together the Folk Festival, which this year will take place on May 21st - 23rd. The March show is a fundraiser to get the festival going. The show will include Miss Mamie Minch (9 pm), Alex Battles and Banjorama! (10 pm), Eli Smith’s own band The Dust Busters (11 pm) and Blind Boy Paxton (midnight). Hope to see you there.

Great show at Barbes Brooklyn last night by the reunited Roulette Sisters. Enjoyed the vocal and washboard stylings of Megan Burelyson, the keen viola by Karen Waltuch, Meg Riechardt’s excellent guitar, and the resonator and deep vocal stylings of Miss Mamie Minch. The band is well complemented by the addition of Waltuch’s ‘big fiddle’- which added quite a lot to the sound since their first album, “Nerve Medicine”. Enjoyed the reunion, the ladies were in fine fettle and the crowd ate it up, particularly old favorites like “Sugar in My Bowl”. Here’s hoping they’ll stay together, put out another record and announce some more dates soon!
