Spirit Family Reunion, Morgan O’Kane and others to play Gowanus Ballroom Saturday, March 10th, 5 pm - Midnight

Today bands from all across Brooklyn will play Gowanus Ballroom to give banjo virtuoso Morgan O’Kane a walk-on-water worthy sendoff for his Sail Away concert voyage; a month-long seafaring tour of the East Coast.

In mid-April—joined by fiddler Ferd Moyse, dobro pickin’ all-around rouser Zeke Healy, and spoons master Liam Crill—O’Kane will board a 36ft sailboat in the Florida panhandle and set sail on a four week voyage. The quartet will travel ever northward, dropping anchor along the way for performances in Key West; St. Augustine; Charleston, South Carolina; Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; and Norfolk, Virginia. To conclude the tour, the band will sail right up the Gowanus Canal for a homecoming concert on Saturday, May 12th at the Gowanus Ballroom.

The show tonight is a fundraiser for the trip.  The lineup includes Spirit Family Reunion, Dog That Bites Everyone, Veveritse Brass Band, Black Cat Rock, Moon Hooch, Vic Thrill, and of course Morgan O’Kane. In addition to the music, this event will feature stunning aerial performance by T-Pow, and mammoth sand paintings created on-site by installation artist Joe Mangrum.

Music will begin early in the evening and will continue long into the night. Documentarians will be on hand to record the event for an upcoming film, and every bit of the proceeds raised at the Sail Away Benefit Concert & Tour Launch Party will go toward funding the tour and keeping these fine gentlemen afloat, scurvy-free, and Brooklyn bound.

Here’s the lineup:

Spirit Family Reunion
Dog That Bites Everyone
Veveritse Brass Band
Black Cat Rock
Moon Hooch
Vic Thrill
Morgan O’Kane
Aerialist T-Pow
Installation artist Joe Mangrum

Doors open at 5pm. $10 admission.

Catch Spirit Family Reunion during their residency every Wednesday this month at 10 pm at the Living Room (154 Ludlow St.)  The shows are free, and include guest musicians each week. Each show will feature a guest act at 9 pm, and Spirit Family Reunion will play at 10 pm.

Spirit Family Reunion is at Brooklyn Winery tonight, Saturday May 1st, at the Kickstarter Brooklyn party which runs from 8 to 10:30 pm and is just $10.

Help Spirit Family Reunion get a van via Kickstarter!

Brooklyn’s favorite old timey band needs a new van. The crew of Spirit Family Reunion says the 1986 Ford Econoline Turtle-Top van that just took them “on a 4,000 mile tour through 11 states is getting old” and they need a new ride to play tourdates across the country.

WHAT YOU GET: For a $10 pledge you get “a digital download of our CD, and a thank you note” and a private concert at your home!

I see a lot of music in Brooklyn.  Country, bluegrass, old-time, lots of great vintage sounds, jazz, etc.  One of my favorite acts of late is the raucous Spirit Family Reunion.  These chaps bring it home.  They sing, they dance, they bang the drum loudly.  They get your foot stomping, your lips smiling and if you’re not careful, your body will start to shake and convulse in sheer delight.

The Reunion is headed off on tour.  You can catch them before they leave the borough of Brooklyn tomorrow night, Wednesday March 2nd, at the fabulous Jalopy Theatre.  Then, they meander south.  But wait! The triumphal return to Kings County will occur on April 10th at 4th Avenue’s Rock Shop.  I hope you’ll take the opportunity to see them tomorrow at Jalopy, and wish them well as they journey into the sunny south.  And, if you know someone in one of these fine places, do forward the link so they can be sure to catch this fine act from the 718.

Spirit Family Reunion did a great show for the kids today at the Rock Shop in Park Slope along with Rhett Miller of the Old 97s as part of Kidrockers.  My little son made his first trip to a music show and was lucky to get his picture taken with the Reunion’s banjo player, Maggie Carlson.

Check out Spirit Family Reunion’s track When My Name is Spoken here.  They play again at 11 pm at Zebulon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on December 23rd.  Check them out- they are a blast!

Miller also told the back story to the song Murder (or a Heart Attack).  Despite singing along to this song for some time I never made the connection that it was about an escaped cat, Charlie.  The kids loved the story.  I suppose I should have thought about what he meant- “And the hole in the screen is barely big enough for you/And not near enough for me to go/And the whole damn complicated/Situation could’ve been/Avoided if I’d only shut the window.”  Oh well, Charlie.

This looks awesome.  KIDROCKERS presents RHETT MILLER of the Old 97s and SPIRIT FAMILY REUNION. SETH HERZOG and CRAIG BALDO host at The Rock Shop 249 4th Avenue, an awesome new venue in BrooklynTickets: $12 advance $15 door (same price for kids and adults). Ticket purchase come with a one-year subscription to Time Out Kids New York.  More information is here.

Spirit Family Reunion at the Living Room Sept 15, 22, 29 and Oct 6

Spirit Family Reunion played a fantastic set last night at the Brooklyn Country Music Festival.  They are doing three Wednesday shows at the Living Room on Ludlow Street over the next few weeks- the 15th, 22nd, 29th of September and the 6th of October. Try to catch them- but bring your stompin’ shoes and your singing voices, the Reunion wants you to join in….

Brooklyn’s Spirit Family Reunion played a great, energetic set last night opening for the Infamous Stringdusters at Brooklyn Bowl.  The Stringdusters sounded as fantastic as I’ve heard them play- what a great show.
